Comparison of Water Allocation Strategies for Wheat Production in the Texas Panhandle AgEcon
Colette, W. Arden; Almas, Lal K..
The declining availability of irrigation water from the Ogallala aquifer combined with increasing energy costs make irrigation strategies much more critical. Irrigation strategies that maximize returns to irrigation require less water and achieve higher returns than strategies aimed at satisfying 100% of the crops evapotranspiration (ET) requirements.

DOES EFFICIENT WATER MANAGEMENT MATTER? PHYSICAL AND ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY OF WATER USE IN THE RIVER BASIN AgEcon
Cai, Ximing; Ringler, Claudia; Rosegrant, Mark W..
With growing water scarcity and increasing competition across water-using sectors, the need for water savings and more efficient water use has increased in importance in water resources management. Improvement in the physical efficiency of water use is related to water conservation through increasing the fraction of water beneficially used over water applied, while enhancing economic efficiency is a broader concept seeking the highest economic value of water use through both physical and managerial measures. Physical and economic efficiency measures are both useful indicators for water management at the irrigation system and river basin level. However, the relationship between physical efficiency and economic efficiency is not always clear and the values...

Measuring the Impact of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) on Irrigation Efficiency and Water Conservation AgEcon
Wallander, Steven; Hand, Michael S..
Since the passage of the 1996 Farm Act, the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) has provided over $10 billion in technology adoption subsidies. One of the national conservation priorities in EQIP is water conservation, but it is not known how participation in EQIP by irrigators affects water application rates and decisions to expand or reduce a farm’s irrigated acreage. Using a farm-level panel data set drawn from three national samples of irrigators taken in 1998, 2003, and 2008, this study provides the first national scale econometric estimates of the changes in water application rates and irrigated acreage that result when a farm receives EQIP payments. Due to a five-fold increase in EQIP funding following the 2002 farm bill, the change in...

Method to evaluate the efficiency of manual overhead irrigation in citrus rootstock liner production REA
SALVADOR,CONAN A.; FERRAREZI,RHUANITO S.; BARRETO,CARLOS V. G.; TESTEZLAF,ROBERTO.
ABSTRACT Brazil produces grafted citrus seedlings in closed screen houses to reduce pest and disease incidence. Irrigation is usually performed by hand using either breaker nozzles or drilled polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe wands on garden hoses. Rootstocks are produced in cone-shaped containers filled with soilless potting mix. Since the containers have a small upper diameter, nutrient solution capture is reduced with the potential to cause environmental contamination from inefficient fertigation. This study provides a method to assess the efficiency of manual overhead irrigation systems used in liner production. The method consists of determining both the volume of water applied and volume lost (i.e., directly and by percolation) in order to obtain an...

Policies drain the North China Plain: Agricultural policy and groundwater depletion in Luancheng County, 1949-2000 AgEcon
Kendy, Eloise; Molden, David J.; Steenhuis, Tammo S.; Liu, Changming; Wang, Jinxia.
The report examines the relationships between agricultural policies in the North China Plain, the approaches to water management that evolved from them, the quantity of water that was actually used, and the consequent groundwater depletion beneath Luancheng County, Hebei Province, from 1949 to 2000. To systematically address these relationships, we use a comprehensive water-balance approach. Our results indicate that a single, longstanding policy-that of using groundwater to meet the crop-water requirements not supplied by precipitation-is responsible for the steady rate of groundwater decline.

PREDICTIVE MODELS OF WATER APPLICATION AND DISTRIBUTION EFFICIENCY IN CONVENTIONAL SPRINKLING REA
Araújo,Edcássio D.; Santos,Dionei L.; Alvino,Francisco C. G.; Ferreira,Lucas B.; Cunha,Fernando F. da.
ABSTRACT Correct determinations of distribution (Ed) and application (EA) efficiencies allow adequate estimations of the gross irrigation depth. This study aimed: i) to determine the distribution efficiency using the Christiansen uniformity coefficient (CUC) in a sprinkler irrigation system under different weather conditions and working pressures; ii) to compare the mean, median, and cumulative CUC values; and iii) to evaluate the predictive capacity of four EA estimation models. CUC values were determined from 80 assessments, as well as the mean, median, and cumulative. The precipitated water depth accumulated in each collector was considered for the accumulated CUC. More uniform evaluations were used for EA (working pressure of 196 kPa), resulting in 20...

Reducing Irrigation Water Demand with Cotton Production in West Texas AgEcon
Almas, Lal K.; Colette, W. Arden; Warminski, Patrick L..
Due to declining water availability from the Ogallala Aquifer and increasing pumping costs, irrigation management options for cotton are analyzed. The study concludes that supplemental irrigation while meeting crop ET requirements is the most profitable option. Switching from corn to cotton production may reduce irrigation water demand in the region.

The Use of Weather Data and Evapotranspiration Requirements to Estimate the Marginal Value Product of Irrigation and the Profit Maximizing Irrigation Level for Corn in the Texas Panhandle AgEcon
Colette, W. Arden; Almas, Lal K.; Robinson, Clay.

Water use efficiency and maximizing profitability of grain sorghum production in the Texas Panhandle AgEcon
Ahamadou, Aly; Dembele, Mamadou; Almas, Lal K.; Brooks, Kathleen R..
The reduction in the availability of irrigation water and the increase in pumping costs resulting from the decline in the Ogallala Aquifer make good management decisions more critical for the survival of the farm firm and the success of the agricultural sector in the Texas Panhandle. Response functions for irrigation and percentage potential evapotranspiration (PET) in the production of grain sorghum are estimated. The response functions are transferred into value product functions and combined with an irrigation energy cost function to determine the profit maximizing irrigation strategy. Three management decision variables; total water available, the level of irrigation and the water to meet crop ET requirements are evaluated. Grain sorghum yield,...
